How come when I google "space junk" there isn't a single image of it floating in orbit?
Did not a single satellite of manned mission fly by some space junk and bother to take a picture? I think it'd be cool to see some really old technology just endlessly floating around the earth, no?
Most of the old stuff eventually de-orbits and burns up - google for "skylab" and "mir space station" for two of the bigger de-orbits.
Another problem is that lots of the space junk is *tiny* - a stray bold here, a nut there, an astronaut's toolbag, etc. In low earth orbit, all of it is in different orbits, and all of it moving at ab out 18,000 miles an hour.
So you're trying to take a picture of something pencil-sized that's flying by at 18,000 miles an hour. One second before it passes you, it's 6 miles away. If it takes 5 seconds for you to get your camera out, it's come and gone 30 miles.
Good luck getting a picture of it.
(And in fact, if you dig around NASA's archives, you *can* find pictures. One of the more famous is the "angry alligator":
